Fuel related ??

  • Hello everybody – I am hoping that someone may be able to helpme.

My 2002 XJR1300 came back from the Farmyard running sweet – it musthave been close to reserve when I parked it up at home aftergetting back.

For various reasons I did not use the bike for about a month afterthis – it sits in my backyard, so was sitting in the sun during therecent heatwave.

When I came to start it, it struggled to start so I assumed itneeded to be on reserve – and got it running. I unlocked my gatesetc and got the bike out but only got about 50 yds and it diedtotally, so pushed it back home.

I filled a can of fresh fuel, put it in and tried again – it willstart and tick over ok but as soon as any revs are applied it dies.I have since replaced the air filter, spark plugs and also fittednew inlet rubbers as they were badly cracked ( on removal they hadnot cracked all the way through ).

Has anyone experienced anything like this – seems strange that itwas ok when I got back from Farmyard ? Seems like fuel starvationto me but I am no mechanic.

Thanks in advance for any wisdom offered.

  • Firstly check the vacuum pipe on no2 inlet to the fueltap is not kinked as you mention you replaced the inlet rubbers itshould go over the fuel line, did you remove the tank?..checkthe vacuum hoses at the rear are notkinked.(although you do mention replacing these after)

If there ok Sounds like you may have picked up some debris up orits gummed up after it was standing, try running someredex/carbcleaner through and let ittickover for a while..if still the same…..remove the carbs andcheck all jets and clean.

  • Hi Hairy

Thanks for the reply and the advice.

Vacuum pipes checked and seem ok – Ihave tried the redex but has made no difference. Fuel tank has beenoff and on a few times now.

I had the main fuel line off yesterday and noticed that intakespigot for 1 and 2 fuel could not be seen, but for 3 and 4 it wasbrim full – would this be relevant or just coincidence ?

Also the AIS system – what does this do in terms of actual running? Could this be isolated/removed if wanted ?

    Thanks

  • Hi all

bike is now fixed and running sweet – had to bite bullet and letworkshop have a look.

They diagnosed that problem was indeed carb related, so carbs were ultrasonically cleaned and re-balanced. Also said that there was waterin the fuel so cleaned up around seal for tank filler cap, drainedand refilled tank with fresh fuel.
